Is there more to being wicked than meets the eye? Wicked, the $2.4 billion Tony Award-winning Broadway hit delves deep into the Land of Oz and demystifies the past of the mysterious Wicked Witch of the West.
The musical begins with Tiffany Haas as Galinda, the Good Witch of the North, who celebrates with the citizens of Oz as they sing "No One Mourns the Wicked." The Wicked Witch of the West, portrayed by Anne Brummel, has been killed by a girl from Kansas and her little dog, too. However, the citizens of Oz soon learn that the beautiful Galinda (later changed to Glinda) actually had a history with said Wicked Witch. As Galinda begins the tale, we are introduced to Elphaba, the Wicked Witch. When the pair ended up as college roommates, they forged an unlikely friendship; the green and misunderstood Elphaba changed not-so-benevolent Galinda's life for the better.
The play is based on Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West and L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but takes place in a world of its own. The costumes and sets transport viewers to the magical Land of Oz, where they learn that there are two sides to every story. As thought-provoking as it is humorous, the family-friendly play delves into issues that are worth exploring, inviting the audience to wonder if people are born wicked, or if wickedness is something that is thrust upon them. The hair-raising vocals and beautiful, intricate set designs made it impossible not to become engaged in this story. Wicked makes a perfect addition to the story of Oz.
