This year alone there have been a million different “next big things.” As a college-aged young adult, I’ll admit to always wanting something new. Within a year of having any new electronic device, I’m soon craving something new and better than what I have now. For instance, I desperately want a new cell phone: the Galaxy S III. The most recent piece of technology that everyone is craving is Apple’s iPhone 5. Personally, I don’t find it worth anyone’s time in investing in Apple’s new toy. Why? I can give you five reasons why I won’t.

The screen is 18% thinner and 20% lighter. Well that’s just wonderful I guess. While a more lighter and thinner phone does make it easier to fit in your pocket. But what do we have to give up for this feature; the answer is a 12% less volume. I’m not sure about anyone else but I like my phone loud. Not to mention, most of your apps will still be designed for the smaller sized iPhones. Have you ever blown a small pixel photo up to big? It looks terrible. Imagine your apps looking just like that.

It boasts about abut 4G LTE. Does anyone even know what LTE even is? It doesn’t really matter. You might be getting faster internet, but believe me, you’ll pay the price. There is no such thing as unlimited data anymore. Once you hit that 2GB mark, you’ll either have to pay or be downgraded to regular old 4G and 3G like everyone else. Oh, and for all you AT&T users, I hope you remember that AT&T still has the least amount of towers out there, so LTE isn’t available everywhere.

Let’s not forget everyone favorite reason for wanting the new iPhone. Her name is Siri. Have an inane question you wanted answer? Do you want the scores for last night’s football game? Do you need to know what movies are playing? Just ask Siri. While I’ll admit I’m dying to play with Siri, I don’t need the iPhone 5 for that. Apple’s iPhone 4S comes loaded with our cheerful little friend and for half the price at ninety-nine dollars.

Reason number four is one of my favorites. Just recently, Apple rolled out the new OS6 operating system for all its IOS platforms. It updated the iTunes store, gave the music player a new look, added an app called passbook, added an Apple store app and much more. It’s almost like getting a brand new iPhone. It’s faster, easier to search, and you don’t have to pay a dime.

As for the icing on the cake, the number one reason you shouldn’t get iPhone 5, especially if you already own multiple accessories, is just that, the accessories. Apple thought it was genius to change its charger from the wire you’ve come accustom to. Its new Lightning in connector can say it’s smaller, smarter, and more durable but it’s still completely inconvenient. Want to connect to your dock? Use your old case that you’ve come to love. Have a car charger you used for everything? Well none of that stuff will work now. If you want it to work, you’ll have to pay a nice little $29.99 for an adaptor and a new case.

So is the new iPhone 5 worth it? That is your decision to make.  As for me, I don’t think it’s worth your money. I’m an electronic junky and I don’t think it’s worth my own money. I am going to go out and buy the much more practical Galaxy S III.
