  • Take back America: Why corporations are harming the political system

Many Americans like you and I are firmly dedicated to provoking a response from political leaders that accepted "Citizens United," giving the power of the people to corporations. The legislation essentially recognizes large corporations as singularity actors whose transparency in the political system is far from unparalleled. Those opposing Citizens United believe that large corporations, with their massive economic involvement in politics are without a doubt, thwarting the power of individual citizens.

  • The Professor's Pen: Money Club: earning, spending and investing

The MONEY Club recently launched at North Campus to help interested students, faculty and staff sharpen their skills to wisely earn, spend and invest money.

In light of the upcoming elections, I feel the need to break my vow of political silence and breach the issue. The institution of partisan politics is destroying our nation.

  • Sports Talk – Become a Star! Support Your Teams!

My New Year's resolution isn't something trivial like going to the gym, calling my grandmother more, or feeding the homeless. No, my new year's resolution is much more important – it's to get more students to attend FSCJ athletic events.

Recently, someone called one of my best friends a war criminal. It seemed like a strange comment, when you consider the personality of said individual. Really? A war criminal? The only way you could ever possibly consider him dangerous is if you happen to have a pathological fear of cuddling. The only atrocity he is in any way likely to commit is maybe hugging me to death or cooking me too much delicious food.

I still remember one of the first articles I ever wrote for the Campus Voice. It was multicultural movie night at South campus. We watched "Subterra," a Spanish film with English subtitles. I sat through the movie dutifully, waiting for a chance to interview Dr. Mirta Zidovic, the professor who hosted the event. I wasn't expecting a long interview, or even a particularly interesting one. I was just writing up a movie review, after all. I definitely wasn't expecting that interview to be a pivotal moment in my existence.

  • Sue Buck The Professor's Pen: Retiring professor Sue Buck shares her memories of 35 year career

Some of you may know that I am retiring in December after 35 years with FSCJ, or should I say FJC (Florida Junior College), FCCJ (Florida Community College at Jacksonville), to the present day Florida State College at Jacksonville. The College, no matter what name it may take, has afforded me many wonderful opportunities to interact with students, colleagues, and friends and to have a fulfilling career. While working at the College, I was also able me to finish my Master's Degree in Education from UNF and to take courses to be certified to teach reading and English.

  • Be a Star! Go to a game and support your teams

I get it, as students at FSCJ, we are not going to experience the same things that a student attending the University of Florida, the University of Miami, or that college in the movie "Animal House" would be able to enjoy. But who cares? Just because our sports games are not televised on ESPN, and our only football team wears flags instead of pads, it doesn't diminish our chance at having an exciting college sports experience.

  • From the professor’s pen

Sitting in the theatre this summer watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part Two, I couldn't help comparing the daring achievements of Harry and friends with those of my students.

We all face personal battles, reversals of fortune, losses, overwhelming odds, set-backs, mysteries, tests of strength, discoveries and victories as part of our living and learning experiences. Harry encounters danger and displays courage. So do my students. Harry is pushed to his limit and doesn't give up. Neither do my students.
