For many students at FCCJ, a trip to the cafeteria is not uncommon while waiting for classes to start. During the morning rush to class, it's hard enough to remember to grab all your books and notebooks for school, let alone food.
As a result of my days spent traveling from one campus to the next, I've begun to see an interesting pattern in the food choices. There is a definite difference between campuses and the quality of food served.
At the Deerwood Center and Downtown Campus cafeterias, there are fully functioning outside vendors, boosting the "yum" factor. Deerwood has a Subway in it, and Downtown Campus has a Quizno's Subs.
The Kent Campus cafeteria, although they do have a nice supply of fried chicken and snacks, cannot compete with the outside vendors that other campuses have. In my opinion, a chicken tender plate and some V8 juice is no substitute for a Subway sandwich and a fresh-out-of-the-oven cookie.
South Campus has a different advantage over the others. Although their cuisine cannot compete with a Quizno's Sub, their atmosphere certainly can.
Their friendly and energetic staff gives it bonus points on hospitality. South Campus also provides their students with two large stage spaces right by the cafeteria. On January 15, they had a live reggae band playing inside the cafeteria, much to the delight of students and staff. Both groups were bouncing and bopping to the beat, and there was seldom a person in line not tapping a toe or sometimes more.
As for North Campus, it's almost unfair to bring them into the equation. In case anyone is unfamiliar with North Campus, it's the home of the culinary arts program. This means great restaurant style food for cheap. It's hard to compete with that, even with outside venders on your side.
So those that choose their schedule based on the campus' cafeteria, make sure you try a sample; no two are alike.
