Surrounded by her teammates and coaches, FSCJ volleyball standout Kanesha Burch signed her letter of intent to play for the University of Alabama's volleyball team next season.
The ceremonial signing was an intimate affair, which took place Nov. 9 in the lobby of the FSCJ South Campus gym. The scene had a going-away party like-vibe, and a wide range of emotions were expressed. Some players voiced their excitement for Kanesha's new endeavor, while others lamented at her impending departure. Most, however, expressed simultaneous feelings of joy and sadness. Teammates took pictures, ate cake, and shared their wishes of good luck with their teammate, while Kanesha wore a permanent smile and a University of Alabama hat.
"Playing for Alabama is a dream come true," said Burch.
Burch grew up in Hoover, Alabama, and played volleyball for Hoover High School, a nationally known athletic powerhouse that has produced multiple professional baseball and football players. She always hoped that one day she would be able wear the crimson uniform of Alabama as a member of the volleyball team, and starting in June 2012, that dream will become a reality.
"It has been two great years at FSCJ. I loved the atmosphere of Florida. There is so much to do here, it's so much different than Alabama," said Burch.
Burch will be returning to Alabama with more than just a suitcase filled with her belongings. She will also take with her the knowledge and wisdom imparted on her by veteran head coach Mary Andrew.
"Coach Andrew helped transform me from a high-school player, into a mature college athlete ready to step up to the next level," Burch said.
The Crimson Tide will be gaining a middle blocker who has proven to be a dominating force throughout the season. During one stretch of the regional tournament, the 6-foot 2-inch' Burch accounted for six straight FSCJ points against Indian River Community College through multiple blocks and crushing kills.
Her impressive skills and dedication throughout the season helped her achieve a number of accolades including the athletic honors trifecta of First Team All-State, First Team All-Regional, and First Team in the Regional Tournament.
Bri, as she is know by friends and teammates, will be looking to make an impact on an Alabama team that has struggled this season against stiff South Eastern Conference competition.
As the season comes to a close, the Stars volleyball coaches and players will miss Kanesha's dominating play and engaging personality, but they understand that this realization of a childhood dream is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that cannot be missed.
