Random Encounter

Most musicians have it pretty tough, travelling all the time, crashing roadside motels, living on Cup Ramen and gas station snack cakes. Orlando-based rock band Random Encounter pulls it off while moonlighting as undead exterminators. In between tours around the United States, they spend their free time pursuing one of history's most devious villains, Koschei the Immortal, and ridding the world of zombies, werewolves, and other malevolent creatures.

Careless, vocalist and accordion player, spent his pre-band days hunting Koschei, with tragic results. He was one of only two survivors of the assaults. It wasn't long before he discovered Koschei's weakness; half of the monster's soul is embedded in a needle stuck inside an egg in the stomach of a duck which is concealed within the belly of a rabbit that is trapped inside an iron chest buried beneath the roots of an oak tree on the island of Buyan (true story). Koschei can only be killed if the needle is destroyed. Random Encounter was formed with an underlying motive: educating the unsuspecting public about Koschei.

Careless founded the band with his sister, Rook, bassist and expert vampire hunter. Their first drummer, a cardboard cutout of Legolas attached to a drum machine, wasn't making the cut, so they set out to find a drummer and guitarist who possessed the skills to help them protect humanity from creatures of the night. They found Moose and Kit, ironically, through a random encounter. Careless accidentally misdialed while trying to book a show, and the stranger on the other end of the phone just so happened to play the drums. And so Moose, a zombie-killing cyborg with 35 pounds of metal in his body and a strong aversion to wearing pants, joined the band. Kit was recruited by Moose, a last-minute job that provided Random Encounter with a werewolf hunter and guitarist. The final recruit was Konami, a dhampir (half human, half vampire), alchemist, and veteran guitarist who inspired Careless to start playing in a band. Together, these five individuals formed Random Encounter to provide a cover for their work as they hunt Koschei the Immortal and other monsters.

Random Encounter as a group has a strong bond; they work well together on stage and off. Their shows are dynamic, with members leaving the stage to jump into a mosh pit or play from the ranks of the audience. Some of their songs tell the story of Koschei, a warning to the public and a testament to their commitment to rid the world of his enmity. Others are inspired by the music of video games such as Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda, a tribute to games that threaded their stories into the minds of players. Random Encounter is set apart from contemporaries by a unique sound and purposeful lyrics. Already epic as monster-hunters, they make equally awesome musicians. Random Encounter will be playing live on Nov. 4 at the Burro Bar. Check out RandomEncounter.com for more information. And next time you are able to walk your dog around the block at night without being attacked by a zombie or a werewolf, you can thank Random Encounter.
